DEAR PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP:

The Iran nuclear agreement (JCPOA) was not a disastrous deal for America. As the world continues to watch North Korea, we have the opportunity to show that diplomacy with the U.S. works. I urge you to choose the path of peace and diplomacy, and to support Congress in making the decision to follow our commitments under the JCPOA. Please put the interests of our country above those advocated by lobbyists.

The agreement—carefully negotiated by the U.S., Iran, the UK, France, Germany, Russia and China—continues to be supported around the world, including by our European allies. Choosing to re-impose sanctions would be disastrous for global security and would destroy any hope of solving the various issues the U.S. has with Iran and Iranian-sponsored actors in the region.

The Iran nuclear agreement (JCPOA) is working. Prior to being decertified by the president, our European allies pushed the U.S. to continue implementing the Iran deal for the betterment of global security. The Iran deal has given the IAEA–which has stated on multiple occasions that Iran is in compliance with the deal—unprecedented access to Iranian nuclear facilities.

The decision to implement new sanctions, and thus jeopardize the deal, is now in the hands of Congress. Killing the deal would not only result in a loss of security for the U.S., but also for our allies. We would also lose the chance to negotiate and solve other concerns we have with Iran in the region. I’ll be watching to see how you deal with this important issue, and will cast my vote next November accordingly.
